The Marco Polo departures area is on the first floor of the terminal building, and is accessible by escalator or lift.
See the number of the check-in counter for your flight on the illuminated central flight indicator or the screens in the main departure hall. The check-in counter number appears on video 2 hours before take-off. If you are in doubt or need help, ask the SAVE information counter, which is to the right as you come off the escalator, near the ticket offices.
Go to your check-in counter as soon as it opens and show your identity document, your ticket and whatever baggage you have. If you have an air miles card, remember to present it when you check in. Check the dimensions and weight of your hand baggage: air carriers have different rules for maximum measurements and weights per passenger.
Keep the boarding card you are given: you will be asked for it at security and when you board the plane. Memorise the boarding time and the gate for your flight.
Security control
First of all, remember that the intensification of security controls causes longer check-in and boarding times.
Go to Departures and pass through security. You will be checked by x-ray and manual machines. You may be asked to remove some articles of clothing and/or your shoes and have bags or knapsacks inspected.
All the material you have with you will have to pass through the x-ray machines, including film (the screening machines guarantee that the product will not be harmed up to 1,600 ASA).
Remember not to put any prohibited articles in your hand baggage, because at this stage of the security check you may have to leave it behind in the airport! Some articles and/or materials cannot be included in your hand baggage, while others cannot be put into the hold. Prohibited articles at present are:
weapons and munitions;
explosives, fireworks and rockets;
compressed gases (flammable, non -flammable, refrigerated and poisonous) such as camping gas and personal defence spray cans;
inflammable substances (liquid and solid);
infectious and poisonous substances;
corrosive substances;
radioactive substances;
oxidising substances;
magnetising substances;
alarm devices;
tunderwater torches with batteries inserted.
This list may vary according to the occurrence of particular events and at the authorities' discretion.
To protect you against the new threat of liquid explosives, the European Union (EU) has adopted new security rules that restrict the amount of liquids that you can take through security checkpoints. They apply to all passengers departing from airports in the EU whatever their destination. You are only allowed to take small quantities of liquids in your hand luggage. These liquids must be in individual containers with a maximum capacity of 100 millilitres each. You must pack these containers in one transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of not more than one litre capacity per passenger. Liquids include:
water and other drinks, soups, syrups;
creams, lotion and oils;
perfumes;
sprays;
gel, including hair and shower gels;
contents of pressured containers, including shaving foam, other foams and deodorants;
pastes, including toothpaste;
liquid-solid mixtures;
mascara;
any other item of similar consistency;
Save Security staff usually reject small packages that may jam on the conveyor or in the airport hold. Furthermore, check-in counter staff will in no circumstances take care of prohibited articles for you.

Airport shopping and Customs regulations
All the information necessary for those travelling from and to European Union and/or non-European Union countries can be found in the Carta doganale del Viaggiatore, Customs information for travellers, which can be downloaded from the Customs Agency website.
There are no limitations on articles being taken out of the country. There may, however, be restrictions laid down bythe country of destination, so it is advisable to consult the country's consular representatives before leaving.
Travellers resident or living outside the European Union can obtain a rebate or reduction on the VAT paid on the sale price of articles purchased in Italy. This benefit is allowed on the following conditions:
the value of the purchase must be greater than 154.94 euro including VAT;
the goods must be for the travellers' personal use or that of their family, and must be carried in their personal baggage;
lthere must be proof of the purchase in the form of an invoice with a description of the goods, the traveller's personal particulars and the details of his or her passport or similar travel document;
the goods must be taken out of the European Union within three months of the end of the month in which they were purchased;
lthe goods purchased and the invoice must be shown to the Customs office at the point where the goods leave the EU. The Customs office endorses the invoice as evidence that the goods have left the European Union territory.
To qualify for a rebate or refund of the VAT included in the sale price of purchases that have been made, the goods concerned must always be shown to Customs.
The endorsed invoice is returned to the Italian vendor within four months of the end of the month of the purchase.
Travellers moving from one European Union country to another can take whatever articles they have bought in any sales outlet without any limitation or formality. Some classes of product liable to manufacturing or purchase tax are exceptions to this: examples are processed tobacco, alcohol and alcoholic drinks, which are only allowed within certain limits:
TOBACCO PRODUCTS: Cigarettes: 800 pezzi Cigarettes up to 3 g each: 400 pezzi Cigars: 200 pezzi Pipe tobacco: 1 Kg.
ALCOHOLIC DRINKS: Alcohol and alcoholic drinks higher than 22% proof: 10 litres Alcoholic drinks lower than 22% proof: 20 litres Wine: 90 litres (of which 60 litres sparkling) Beer: 110 litres
